Why We Love Cross-Country Skiing in Winnipeg

Cross-country skiing has become one of my wife’s and my favourite winter activities here in Winnipeg.

From a fitness standpoint, cross-country skiers are some of the most well-conditioned athletes in the world. In fact, elite Nordic skiers consistently record some of the highest VO₂ max values ever measured — often in the 80–90+ ml/kg/min range — placing them at the top of aerobic capacity across all sports. That alone tells you something about the potential cardiovascular demands and rewards of this activity.

What makes cross-country skiing so powerful is that it uses both the upper and lower body, emphasizes strong hip extension, and allows you to smoothly control your heart rate and exertion. You can push hard up a climb or settle into a relaxed glide and keep things conversational.

Great Places to Start in Winnipeg

Winnipeg offers excellent options to begin your cross-country skiing journey.

At the Windsor Park Nordic Centre, you can rent skis, take lessons, explore varied terrain, and bring your kids. One of our clients, Hilary, shares:

“I take my two sons under 10 years old to Windsor. They have a great instruction program, and my boys love competing in their sprint races!”

Other great local businesses like Sampson’s Sporting Life and Olympic Ski & Cycle offer rental and purchase options as well.

If you’re looking to explore trails, Winnipeg and the surrounding area are fortunate to have outstanding locations, including:

  • Birds Hill Provincial Park
  • Sandilands Provincial Forest
  • Whiteshell Provincial Park
  • Bittersweet Cross Country Ski Trails
  • Shannondale Ski Trails
  • And our quick favourite — just 20 minutes from our home — Beaudry Provincial Park

Why It Fits Our Training Philosophy

From a programming standpoint, I love fitting cross-country skiing into our weekend schedule.

It’s naturally a distance-based activity and aligns perfectly with our belief in developing Zone 2 cardio. While training the aerobic zone, we generally recommend completing activity anywhere from 45-120minutes at a sustainable pace.  If wearing a heart rate this can be between 110-160beats per minute (depending on age), and you should be able to maintain a conversation (talk test principles). Zone 2 training helps lower resting heart rate, improve aerobic capacity, and enhance recovery. It builds the engine without burying the nervous system.

Cross-country skiing also provides a powerful mental reset. For many, it’s a new or lightly developed skill that requires coordination and focus — just enough challenge to keep you engaged — but it allows you to manage intensity so you’re not overly taxed afterward.

In the book “Keep Sharp” by Sanjay Gupta, he highlights the importance of walking in nature with friends, discussing meaningful parts of life, and spending time outdoors to support brain health. Cross-country skiing checks many of those same boxes: movement, nature, community, and conversation.

Finish Winter Strong

If you’re looking for a great way to finish off winter, visit the Windsor Park Nordic Centre, get fitted for a set of skis, and maybe even take advantage of an end-of-season sale for next year.

Cross-country skiing might just become part of your winter activity résumé — and one of the most rewarding ways you train all season.

Enjoy the Snow ❄️
